NHMH – No Health without Mental Health, www.nhmh.org,  was founded in San Francisco, CA in 2007 by Florence Fee, a corporate lawyer,  family caregiver, and BH advocate for two siblings with serious mental illness.  Dr. Doug Levinson of Stanford University and Dr. Stephen Hinshaw of UC Berkeley and UCSF are co-founders. NHMH maintains offices on both East and West Coast.  NHMH has a focused mission to advance effective behavioral care services in medical settings (and v.v.).

Before NHMH’s creation, Florence was a leader in the NAMI state affiliate in California and active in its advocacy work at the state and local level on behalf of individuals with serious mental illness.

NHMH is committed to advancing health policy reform at the federal health policy level needed for delivery of effective integrated medical-behavioral care. NHMH is actively involved in Wash D.C. before Congress and at federal health agencies.  NHMH is also a participant in a 2016-2021 PCORI clinical trial involving tele-psychiatry integrated care in rural FQHCs across three states.

Florence brings to her federal health policy advocacy work commitment based on family experience, as well as executive management skills honed during a 27 yr career in the global energy industry.  She has a J.D. (law) degree from the University of San Francisco, M.A. from Golden Gate University in International Economics and a B.A. from Manhattanville College in New York in Political Science, and is a licensed member of the California State Bar.

Steve Hinshaw is an international expert on both developmental psychopathology and the stigma of mental illness. His landmark books, which break new ground on the subject and which are reaching wide audiences, include: “The Mark of Shame: Stigma of Mental Illness and an Agenda for Change” (2007), “Breaking the Silence: Mental Health Professionals Disclose their Personal and Family Experiences of Mental Illness” (2008), and “The Years of Silence are Past: My Father’s Life with Bipolar Disorder” (2002).

In support of his research work, Steve has received multiple research grants from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). He is the editor of the journal Psychological Bulletin, the most widely cited journal in the field of psychology, and is Past President of the International Society for Research in Child and Adolescent Psychopathology. He is a Fellow of the American Psychological Society, the American Psychological Association and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Steve received the Distinguished Teaching Award of the College of Letters and Sciences at the University of California, Berkeley in 2001.

Steve has a A.B. from Harvard College, summa cum laude, and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from UCLA . He was a clinical psychology intern at UCLA’s Neuropsychiatric Institute and a post-doctoral fellow at the Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute at the University of California San Francisco. He taught in the Psychology Department at UCLA and joined the Berkeley faculty in 1990.

Steve’s work focuses on risk factors for child mental disorders, family and peer relationships, response to medication and psychosocial treatment, and long-term outcomes. He has directed summer research camps and longitudinal (life-span) studies for boys and girls with ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) for over twenty-five years. He has authored over 200 articles and reviews on child psychopathology, treatment approaches, and stigma. His latest book, “The Triple Bind: The Hidden Crisis Among Today’s Teenage Girls,” will be published by Random House in early 2009. Over the years, he has integrated his scientific work with emphasizing the importance of disclosure — related to his family’s experiences with severe mental illness — and of fighting stigma.

Roger G. Kathol, President of Cartesian Solutions, Inc.™, is a health strategist who assists employers, government agencies, health plans, hospitals and clinics, and care management vendors develop integrated programs for patients with health complexity, many of whom have concurrent general medical and mental disorders. Dr. Kathol is board certified in internal medicine, psychiatry, and medical management with extensive experience gained during 22 years as a physician/teacher/researcher at the University of Iowa and 15 years as an international health complexity and integrated care consultant. His background ideally positions him to assist stakeholders in the health industry create integrated health solutions which improve care quality, augment outcomes, and lower total health care and health-related costs. Cartesian Solutions, Inc.™ consultants assist clients in the creation of customized quality-enhancing and cost-saving multidisciplinary clinical programs and in the implementation of complexity-based integrated physical and mental health care management services.

Dr. Kathol has received numerous national research and recognition awards. He currently serves as a strategy and healthcare advisor to several government and granting agencies and national and international organizations. He is a Board Member of the Minnesota Medical Association. Since leaving the academic practice of medicine, he has worked to integrate physical and mental health business practices as Medical Director at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota and has completed over 150 integrated care consultations as President of Cartesian Solutions, Inc.™. Recent consultations include: Premera BCBS (WA), New York Presbyterian Hospital /Columbia University (NY), Parkland Hospital (TX), Volunteer Health Plan (TN), Pittsburgh Paint (PA), Essential Health (MN), and Taconic IPA (NY).

Dr. Kathol is an adjunct professor of internal medicine and psychiatry at the University of Minnesota. He has published over 160 peer reviewed articles and 25 book chapters. In his book Healing Body AND Mind: A Critical Issue for Healthcare Reform (2007) with co-author Suzanne Gatteau, he brings to life the negative impact that segregated physical and mental health care has on the lives of patients and outlines the steps that can be taken today which improve health, reduce impairment, and lower health care costs through health service integration. In collaboration with the Case Management Society of America, Dr. Kathol and co-authors, introduce the industry-changing steps to integrated CM in their book, The Integrated Case Management Manual: Assisting Complex Patients Regain Physical and Mental Health (June 2010).

Robert McCarron, D.O. completed a dual residency in internal medicine and psychiatry at Rush University and is now board certified in psychiatry, psychosomatic medicine and internal medicine. While on faculty as Health Sciences Associate Clinical Professor at the University of California, Davis School of Medicine, he was the founding training director of the only California based combined internal medicine / psychiatry residency program. In this role, he was recently awarded a 2.6 million dollar grant from the California Department of Mental Health to create, replicate and implement a “Med Psych” curriculum that can be used by other primary care practitioner training programs. He oversees the UC Davis Med Psych clinic, where he serves as Director of medicine and psychiatry residency education. He is also the Director of Pain Psychiatry, within the UC Davis Division of Pain Medicine.

Dr. McCarron has numerous publications in the areas of unexplained physical complaints, depression and anxiety in the primary care setting, metabolic syndrome and medical education. He recently edited a textbook titled, Lippincott’s Primary Care Psychiatry, with a companion web site at PSYCHIATRYFORPCP.COM, and he spends much of his time training primary care practitioners in this area. He served as Co-chair for a statewide project (CPCI) that supported the integration of primary care and behavioral health for several counties in California.

Dr. McCarron is the immediate past president of the Central California Psychiatric Society. He serves as immediate past president of the Association of Medicine and Psychiatry, a national organization with the mission of promoting general medical and psychiatric clinical research, patient care and medical education. Dr. McCarron is the Medicine / Psychiatry Section editor for Current Psychiatry and an Associate Editor for The Primary Care Companion to the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry. He represents Central California as an American Psychiatric Association Assembly member.
